Pioneering Women in STEM: Apollo Proton Cancer Centre Honours Trailblazers
In an effort to celebrate the accomplishments of women in STEM fields, the Apollo Proton Cancer Centre held a significant meeting in the city today. The event brought together prominent figures from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, creating a strong platform to highlight the journeys of women leaders. Surgeon Vice Admiral Aarti Sarin, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services, was the Chief Guest, emphasizing the need to acknowledge women’s leadership in vital scientific areas. The gathering included distinguished practitioners from fields like Oncology, Physics, and Atomic Energy.
The meet featured several events,
including a panel discussion on supporting women in STEM, a fireside chat on
the impact of physics and technology in healthcare, and a roundtable on tech
entrepreneurship in healthcare and science. These activities provided a
comprehensive view of women’s contributions to innovative areas. Dr. Manjula
Rao, Consultant in Breast Surgical Oncology and Co-convener of the meeting,
expressed her joy at the event's success. She stated that organizing this
meeting for International Women’s Day was a great source of pride and a chance
to showcase the inspiring work of Indian women in STEM. Despite the high
percentage of women graduating in these fields, they account for less than 20%
of the workforce and hold fewer than 10% of leadership roles, especially in
surgery. This event aimed to celebrate outstanding women achievers and
encourage future generations to pursue their STEM dreams.
Dr. Sapna Nangia, Director at the
Apollo Proton Cancer Centre and the convenor of the meeting, noted that over
300 delegates registered, highlighting the importance of dialogue about women's
journeys. The Chief Guest, along with other speakers, had been pioneers in
their fields, and their experiences would inspire those in STEM. The event
stressed the importance of recognizing and supporting women in scientific
fields, showcasing their contributions, leadership, and potential for
transformative change.
