A Giant in Cardiac Surgery: Dr K AM Cherian 83rd Birthday and 40th Memorial Day Marked with Glowing Tributes
Rich tributes were paid to Padma Shri Dr K M Cherian, a
famous cardiologist and pioneer in cardiac surgery, who recently passed away.
This tribute took place during a function organized by his family to celebrate
his 83rd birthday and 40th Memorial Day. His autobiography was released by J
Radhakrishnan, former health secretary and CMD of TANGEDCO. Radhakrishnan
praised Dr Cherian as a visionary who consistently pushed for investment in
medical research, emphasizing that his efforts contributed to Tamil Nadu
becoming a medical hub.
Several senior cardiologists, including Dr Anantharaman, Dr K N Reddy, and Dr Mohamed Rela, honored Dr Cherian for his compassion and skill in performing complex surgeries, sharing their fond memories of him. Dr K M Cherian achieved many milestones, including India’s first successful coronary artery bypass surgery, heart transplant, heart and lung transplant, and pediatric heart transplant. He received the Padma Shri award in 1991 and founded several medical institutions. Sandhya Cherian and Sanjay Cherian, his children, were also present at the event.
