TANKER 32nd Annual Charity and Awards Nite Celebrates Success
TANKER Foundation held its 32nd Annual Charity and Awards Nite on January 27, 2025, at Hotel Savera, RK Salai, Chennai.The program started with the Mr. Venkatesan & Mrs. Malathi Venkatesan TANKER Foundation Memorial Lecture by Mr. V. Gururajan, a 32-year post transplant survivor. He shared his personal journey, including his brother's decision to donate a kidney to him and the support he received from family and friends. He discussed how he maintains his health through diet, exercise, yoga, and meditation.
Dr.
Georgi Abraham, Founder Trustee of TANKER Foundation, emphasized the importance
of research in preventing kidney disease, highlighting TANKER's collaborative
efforts with doctors and specialists across India.
The
Chief Guest, Thiru Ma. Subramanian, the Honourable Minister of Health &
Family Welfare of Tamil Nadu, praised TANKER's dedication and called attention
to chronic kidney disease (CKD) as a significant public health challenge. He
urged for more resources from both public and private sectors to enhance
awareness and organ donation. Furthermore, he mentioned Tamil Nadu Government's
initiatives to improve public medical care and preventive measures for
non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Mr.
M. Anandan, the Guest of Honour and Founder of Aptus Value Housing Finance
Limited, expressed his happiness in being part of TANKER Foundation and
acknowledged the valuable services provided for those with kidney diseases.
Mrs.
Latha Kumaraswami, Managing Trustee of TANKER Foundation, welcomed attendees,
noting the rising need for dialysis and the importance of increasing awareness
about kidney diseases. The Awards Nite recognized research in nephrology and
public service. Since its establishment in 1993, TANKER has grown with support
from various sectors, including government schemes and numerous donors. She
thanked TANKER's staff for their outstanding contributions during challenging
times like the pandemic and cyclones. TANKER operates 14 dialysis units and
conducts 8,988 dialysis sessions monthly for 903 patients. To date, it has
provided 734,522 free and subsidized dialysis for 2,960 patients and offered
financial support of ₹4. 38 crores to 5,238 patients. Additionally, TANKER has
reached 2. 10 lakh individuals through 1,468 awareness programs and screened
45,104 people for early kidney disease detection through 578 camps.
Awards presented included the K. V. George Kottukulam Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award, given to Dr. Mythri for her research on IgA Nephropathy, which included a prize of ₹2,00,000, a citation, and a gold medallion. Dr. M. K. Srinivasan received the Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for his decades of service to the underprivileged. The K. Venkatanarayana TANKER Foundation Awareness Award was awarded to Dr. Usha Sriram for her work raising diabetes awareness among women. The La Renon TANKER Foundation For the Sake of Honour Award went to Mr. V. Gururajan, while the Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Dr. Sanjay Pande and Dr. Praveen Namboodiri for their contributions to nephrology.
Lastly, the Ashok Sankaralingam TANKER Foundation Patient Endowment supported four underprivileged patients with kidney failure, totaling ₹2,00,000. Awards for dedication and service were also given to TANKER staff. The evening concluded with a dinner, and gratitude was expressed to sponsors, staff, and donors, particularly Mrs. Nina Reddy, who sponsored the dinner.
