Creating a Culture of Inclusion: Best Practices
Godrej DEI Lab, which focuses on diversity and inclusion, and the law firm Khaitan & Co held an event to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities. They launched the second edition of the Handbook on Rights of Persons with Disabilities during their Disability Inclusion Summit in Mumbai. This handbook acts as a useful resource for understanding the development of disability rights in India.
Parmesh Shahani, the head of Godrej DEI Lab, emphasized the importance of this event in promoting workplace inclusion. He mentioned that by collaborating with various stakeholders, they aim to create a more fair workplace in India and believes the handbook will help organizations shift from just following legal requirements to truly committing to including persons with disabilities (PwD).
Aakash Choubey from Khaitan & Co highlighted that creating an inclusive workplace is not just a legal duty, but a necessity for organizations. He suggested that effective strategies like accessible buildings, supportive work arrangements, and inclusive hiring can create an environment where everyone feels appreciated. He noted that recognizing inclusivity benefits both workplaces and society.
The handbook covers important laws like the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, and the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017. It gives insights into rights, entitlements, and legal support related to education, employment, healthcare, and more. This year’s summit also featured a discussion on practical ways to improve workplace inclusivity, featuring various experts in the field. This initiative reflects Godrej DEI Lab’s dedication to enhancing opportunities for persons with disabilities in Indian workplaces.
