Apollo Hospitals performs Lifesaving Cardiac procedure on a 58 year old

A 58-year-old man with a massive rupture of the left ventricular chamber of the heart underwent a life-saving surgery at Apollo Specialty Hospitals, Vanagaram. The high-risk surgical repair was performed by Dr. D. Janardhana Reddy, a ventricular restoration specialist, and his energetic surgical team.

A 58 years old man, suffered chest pain as a result of a major blockage in the coronary artery at the back of the heart. The patient underwent successful angioplasty and stenting of the blocked coronary artery in Andhra Pradesh. After a brief period of good health, he began to experience limitations in physical activity, tiredness, palpitations, and shortness of breath. He came to Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Vanagaram with the above condition.

 A coronary angiography revealed the stent to be patent. A massive rupture of the left ventricular chamber of the heart showed, a false aneurysm (thinned out sac) in the MRI.  The aneurysm of the heart muscle was pressing against the diaphragm and extending to the fundus of the stomach (upper curved part of the stomach). The patient was referred for surgical repair by Dr. D. Janardhana Reddy, a ventricular restoration specialist.

The family was informed of the patient's deteriorating condition and only a high risk surgical repair was the last hope of survival. An adherent pericardium, a membrane that surrounds the heart, can sometimes keep the rupture contained. The dilated sac was carefully detached from the diaphragm and pericardium by Dr. D. Janardhana Reddy and his team. A synthetic patch was used to close the massive defect in the ventricle, excluding the infarcted, devitalized section of the heart's left ventricular chamber.

Speaking about the procedure Dr. Janardhana Reddy, Chief Cardiac Surgeon said, Rupture of the heart is a devastating complication after a heart attack. Early detection of heart muscle rupture is critical to avoid life-threatening consequences; with better awareness of this disorder, immediate surgical intervention, and patient stabilisation, survival is possible. Aneurysmal sac of devitalized cardiac muscle in the infarcted area is the cause for the rupture.

The patient recovered well and was discharged from the hospital on the tenth day.
