INAUGURATION OF THE ROTARY TANKER DIALYSIS CENTER AT PILLAR HOSPITAL

Almost 2.5 lakh people die of kidney failure in India every year. It is the third largest killer after malignancy and heart disease. Millions suffer from some form of kidney disease and many of them, particularly in India cannot afford the cost of treatment or care. Around 14440 people get kidney failure every year in Tamilnadu alone, and only 10% have access to treatment. 


TANKER (Tamilnad Kidney Research) Foundation is a registered non-profit charitable organisation started in June 1993 with the aim of helping under-privileged patients with kidney disease by giving subsidised dialysis and one time financial help for medication, investigation and transplantation and also to spread awareness about kidney disease. TANKER cares for those, the underprivileged, who suffer kidney problems of any kind, reversible or terminal, regardless of caste, creed, sex or religion. 

Dr. Georgi Abraham, Founder Trustee of TANKER Foundation felt the need to help the people of Andaman Nicobar Islands for dialysis treatment and requested Rtn Sharath Kumar VR, President of Rotary Club of Guindy to take up this project. 

Rotary club of Guindy along with their partners Rotary Chatswood sunrise in Australia, Rotary Penang in Malaysia, Rotary Grand Baie in Mauritius, Rotary Club of Port Blair, TANKER Foundation and Pillar Hospital have joined hands to set up the Rotary TANKER Dialysis Centre to reach out to the needy dialysis patients in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. 

The Dialysis Unit with 6 dialysis machines and other equipment was inaugurated by Rtn Shekhar Mehta, Rotary International President 2021-2022 at Pillar Hospital, Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday 20th June 2021 at 10.30 am along with  Rtn. Sharath Kumar VR, President of Rotary Club of Guindy, Rtn S. Muthupalaniappan Dist Governor RID 3232, Rtn. Sudip Mukherjee Dist Governor RID 3291 (all virtually) and Dr. Georgi Abraham, Founder Trustee, TANKER Foundation and Sister Jensia Mary of Pillar Hospital who were there in person. 


Dr.Georgi spoke about the increasing need for dialysis treatment in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and was grateful that Rotary and Pillar Hospital had come forward to help in this project.Mrs Latha Kumaraswami ,Managing trustee,TANKER Foundation gave an update about TANKER Foundation and also about their 11 dialysis units in Tamil Nadu and other centres in Imphal Manipur,Kerala,MGM pondicherry,Tanzania and Vennikulam Kerala. Rtn.Sharat,President,Rotary Club of Guindy spoke about his long association with TANKER where he helped along with his fellow Leos in raising funds for TANKER in 1993 with Thiruda Thiruda  and Daud film premieres. He was very happy to be associated again with this new dialysis centre.

An award evening ceremony titled “PURASKARA SANDHYA 2023” organised by Indian Magic Academy was held in a grand magical manner on 3 rd September 2023 at Madras Kerala Samajam Hall, Chennai.   Film star Seema inaugurated the award ceremony. The chief guest, Hon. Minister of Tamil Nadu Shri. P. K.
