Members of Parliament stress collective responsibility in protecting children

Child marriage continues to be a serious violation of child rights, depriving children especially girls of education, health, and a safe childhood. Despite legal provisions, the practice persists due to lack of awareness and social vulnerabilities, making sustained public sensitisation and strong enforcement essential.

A Child Marriage Awareness Campaign was organized on 30th January 2026 at Annai Sathya Government Child Care Institution, Bethanayakanpalayam, Salem District. The programme was jointly organized by the District Administration, Salem, Indian Community Welfare Organisation (ICWO), and Just Rights for Children (JRC) as part of the 100-Day Intensive Awareness Campaign to prevent child marriage titled of the national campaign “BAL VIVAH MUKTI RATH”.

Malaiarasan, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), Kallakurichi Constituency who emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in protecting children and ensuring strict implementation of laws against child marriage.

As part of the programme, the first copy of the Awareness Poster on Prevention of Child Marriage was received by Thiru. S. Sri Murali, District Child Protection Officer, Salem & received the second copy of the Awareness poster by Thiru.N.Indirajith, Child Protection Officer, Salem Collectorate. The poster highlighted the Tamil Nadu Government’s efforts to curb child marriage through enforcement of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, active Child Marriage Prohibition Officers, District Child Protection Units, the 1098 Child Helpline, and community-level monitoring and awareness initiatives.

Speaking briefly on the occasion, Mr. A. J. Hariharan, Secretary, ICWO, said, “Child marriage can be prevented when communities are informed and institutions work together.
