South's Hair Colour Revolution: A Market on the Move
Tamil
Nadu has emerged as the second-largest market for shampoo hair colour in South
India, reflecting a shift towards quick and convenient hair colouring
solutions. Consumers are increasingly opting for shampoo hair colour, a
do-it-yourself (DIY) format that eliminates the need for professional
assistance.
With rising awareness and a preference for ease of use, Tamil Nadu now contributes over ₹140 crore of South India’s ₹500 crore shampoo hair colour market. Industry analysts attribute this surge in demand to the convenience of shampoo-based applications, which provide a fast and efficient alternative to conventional hair dyes such as powders and mehndi, making them well-suited for modern lifestyles.
“As consumers seek personalized and innovative hair colour solutions, the growth in demand for shampoo hair colour has been significant,” said Neeraj Senguttuvan, Head of Marketing – Personal Care at Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL).
Recognizing this shift, Godrej Consumer Products offer Godrej Selfie, a five-minute shampoo hair colour brand. The unisex product comes in two sizes, INR 15 pack meant specially for short hair consumers while INR 30 pack is primarily for long hair consumers.
“This offering will also nudge consumers using other low-cost hair colours like powder and mehndi hair colour to upgrade to an affordable yet convenient and better solution,” Senguttuvan added. The South region contributes 58% of Godrej Selfie’s sales, highlighting the brand’s growing strong foothold in the category.
South India currently leads India’s shampoo hair colour market when compared to other regions, contributing approx.59% of the country’s total sales. Andhra Pradesh leads the category with a market size of ₹180 crore, followed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka (₹132 crore), and Kerala (₹72 crore).
With the category witnessing over 28% growth annually, industry experts predict that South India’s influence on India’s hair colour market will only strengthen further.
