New Hope for Patients: 9 Haemodialysis Machines Inaugurated at Rekha Memorial Unit
Almost 250,000 people die of kidney failure in India every year, making it the third leading cause of death after cancer and heart disease. Globally, one in ten people suffers from some form of kidney disease, and many, especially in India, lack the financial means for treatment. In Tamil Nadu, approximately 14,440 people face kidney failure annually, yet only 10% can access necessary care.
To help those in need, the TANKER
(Tamilnad Kidney Research) Foundation, a non-profit organization, was
established in June 1993. Its mission is to provide subsidized dialysis,
one-time financial support for medications, investigations, and transplants,
while also promoting awareness about kidney diseases. TANKER serves
underprivileged individuals suffering from any kidney-related issues,
regardless of their background.
TANKER operates 14 dialysis units,
with 11 located in Chennai and others in Madurai, Vellore, and Tiruppur. The Ambattur
unit is supported by the Ambattur Rotary Club and Hospital, CMCHIS, and various
donors.
Recently, Indian Oil Corporation
Limited (IOCL) contributed nine new dialysis machines, which were inaugurated
by Shri N. Senthil Kumar, expressing appreciation for TANKER’s work. IOCL is
also supporting TANKER’s awareness and screening programs, focusing on early
detection of kidney disease, crucial for timely intervention.
Dr. Georgi, the Founder Trustee of
TANKER, noted their ongoing study on diabetes and methods for early kidney
disease detection, aiming to benefit the underprivileged who struggle to afford
treatment. Mrs. Vasanthi and Mr. Prakash provided details on IOCL’s support,
including the new machines that can measure creatinine levels similarly to blood
sugar tests.
Mrs. Latha Kumaraswami, Managing
Trustee of TANKER, thanked IOCL, CMCHIS, Greater Chennai Corporation, and other
supporters for their continued generosity. She explained that hemodialysis
machines last about 6 to 7 years, stressing the need for timely replacements to
maintain quality patient care.
TANKER has performed over 734,000 dialysis sessions, assisting 903 patients, and conducted awareness programs for over 210,000 people, alongside screening camps for 45,104 individuals to promote early detection of kidney disease. The dedicated staff at TANKER are committed to helping those in need, and the recent donations will significantly benefit patients in Thiruverkadu.
